Ayam, Ceiling Price & Laissez Faire

PETALING JAYA: Chicken farmers welcomed the government’s move to abolish the RM6 per kilo ceiling price but pointed out that the poultry industry had never received any form of subsidy.

 

Responding to a statement by Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Abdul Samad Wednesday, the Federation of Livestock Farmers Associations of Malaysia (FLFAM) emphasised that the industry had always operated on a purely commercial basis.

 

The report quoted Shahrir as saying: “Since the country produces more chicken that it needs, it would no longer be subsidised.

 

“My ministry and the Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Ministry have agreed to the removal of ceiling prices on fresh chicken. The prices at ex-farm, wholesale and retail levels will be removed some time this year.”

The ceiling price for poultry of RM6 per kilogram is soon to be abolished. This approach is said was done by the government for the reason to help poultry farmers who are unable to absorb the ever increasing amount of poultry production costs. This removal of ceiling price will surely cause the price of chicken meat to rise as the price will now be determined by the free market economics.

 

Free market economics juga dikenali sebagai ‘the laissez faire system’ yang mana kerajaan membenarkan ekonomi contohnya seperti harga ayam ditentukan oleh pasaran. Di sini pasaran sudah semestinya merujuk kepada konsep supply and demand, satu konsep yang menjadi batu asas kepada sistem kapitalis yang kian diamalkan secara total di negara ini.

 

Pada pendapat aku, the laissez faire system does promote growth in trade by encouraging traders to trade without limit nor constraint. It is said that this free trade process help enhance the economy of the State. I think that that statement is actually two pronged.

 

Dalam free trade negara menikmati pertumbuhan ekonomi yang baik dan mampan berbanding dengan negara yang mana sistem ekonominya di ‘beset’ oleh konkongan dan sekatan pemimpin yang authoritarian. Ini tidak boleh dinafikan. Walaubagaimanapun dalam masa negara ‘kononnya’ mengalami pertumbuhan ekonomi, tahap belian atau pun purchasing power golongan pengguna makin merudum disebabkan oleh penguasaan mutlak golongan peniaga terhadap pasaran.

 

Perhaps it is time for this country to make a bold move by limitting free market (laissez faire) by making serious involvement in trade. Scrap the free market if need be, impose authoritarian economic system if need be, yang penting kebajikkan rakyat terutamanya low income earners dijaga.

 

Besar sangatkah pengaruh poultry farmers sehingga berjaya menundukkan sebuah kerajaan yang telah menerima mandat rakyat (walaupun bukan 2/3 parlimen)?

 

Sampai bilakah purchasing power rakyat negara ini akan didesak turun? Adakah sehingga berlakunya kegawatan ekonomi sepertimana the Great Depression pada awal kurun ke-20? Atau pun sehingga berlaku nye revolusi yang didukung oleh rakyat-rakyat yang terdesak sepertimana berlakunya French Revolution yang tersohor itu?

 

Mungkin orang akan berkata, “Relax la bro, harga ayam je naik”. Aku rasa itu betul la buat masa ni kerana aku sangat yakin yang harga-barang lain yang selama ini dikawal dengan ceiling price akan turut naik setelah ceiling price dimansuhkan. Ini adalah pasti memandangkan ‘kuasa-kuasa’ yang mengawal brang-barang komoditi sudah tentunya lebih persuasive dari segala segi daripada para penternak ayam Malaysia.
